The proposal involves creating a participatory process together with a programme of events and workshops in order to rehabilitate Campo das Salésias, an abandoned football field in Belém, Lisbon.
With the active participation of the local community and several local agents, our goal is to find funding to develop the project and create conditions so that the people there may enjoy and use the place, find independent means and ways to improve and look after it.
The first phase of the project is to carry out detailed research in order to learn about the site’s history and background. Consequently, this investigation will define the project’s objectives and goals.
The research is based on structured interviews to identify future users of this space and their needs and desires. At the same time, a survey will be made of the social dynamics of relevant neighbourhoods and associations nearby to ensure that the space is rehabilitated according to the wishes of the local community.
In a second phase following the research work, we hope to get funding in order to achieve the community’s wishes and aspirations.
Objectives will be set down in a formal document with all partners involved, including the Lisbon City Hall, Casa Pia institution, Os Belenenses football club, local residents associations and other entities during the first phase.
Expectations are high because of the tremendous potential of this area, situated in a prime location of the city as a new green space suitable for leisure, recreation and sports.
The current financial crisis makes this kind of approach more favourable as it tends to be less costly and more effective, and promotes a sense of ownership in those involved, which is critical to the success of rehabilitation projects in urban space.
Our multidisciplinary team will be instrumental in creating dialogue throughout the process because it’s made up of a group that includes architects, designers and social psychologists who are aware of the specificities and complexities of this area and the project.
Campo das Salésias is an emblematic place with strong emotional appeal that will allow local interests to be identified and supported. We believe that the best results can only be achieved with a multidisciplinary response.
